Enphase Encharge Installation

Build Reliable Backup Power with an Enphase Certified Installer

Solar panels are only one part of an energy strategy. They generate power when there is sunlight, while your peak energy demands might be totally different from that time. You may have a high energy demand when your business is running during the afternoon. You may use more electricity in the evening at home. Your EV may require charging after work. And your utility company may charge you differently based on your usage of electricity.

The Enphase IQ Battery allows you to store the excess energy generated during the sun hours and you can utilize it during peak hours, at night or when sun is not shining. Solar SME, a certified Enphase installer, designs battery systems around more than outage protection. We analyze your energy usage, peak demand, solar output, electrical loads, utility rates, and future energy needs to design a tailored battery storage solution for you.

How Enphase IQ Batteries Work?

One of the key features of the Enphase Energy system is its AC coupling design. Rather than having the DC electricity from the solar panels go directly into a central battery inverter, Enphase relies on microinverter-based solar generation and battery systems working on the AC side of the system.

In simple terms:

Solar panels → Enphase microinverters → AC power → Loads / Grid / IQ Battery

When solar production exceeds the property’s immediate demand, available energy can be directed to the battery. Later, the stored energy can be discharged to serve electrical loads. The IQ Battery 5P system has six built-in grid-forming microinverters, and the IQ Battery 10C battery system contains IQ microinverter technology developed by Enphase. For backup applications, the IQ System Controller and associated system equipment help manage the transition between grid-connected and backup operation.

Which Enphase IQ Battery is Right for You?

Enphase’s current battery lineup includes the IQ Battery 5P and IQ Battery 10C, with each model designed around Enphase’s AC-coupled architecture and integrated power electronics.

Enphase IQ Battery 5P: Compact, Modular & Powerful

Do you need a flexible storage solution that can adjust its capacity depending on your energy needs? The Enphase IQ Battery 5P has 5.0 kWh energy capacity and an output power capacity of up to 3.84 kVA at 240V.

The battery has a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry and contains six grid-forming microinverters. Its modular design means that several batteries can be combined in case of larger energy storage and output needs. The 5P battery can work well with both backup and multi-battery systems.

Enphase IQ Battery 10C: More Energy and More Power in One Unit

Need more storage and higher continuous output? The Enphase IQ Battery 10C is the fourth generation of Enphase batteries. The battery provides 10.0 kWh of energy capacity and 7.08 kVA of continuous AC output at 240V.

It also uses LFP battery chemistry and contains four IQ8B grid-forming microinverters. In addition, it utilizes a passive cooling system, meaning that the battery does not have fans or moving cooling components. The combination of capacity and output power makes Enphase Encharge 10C perfect for larger loads and equipment that demands large initial startup energy.

Whole-Home Backup with Enphase

The role of a battery backup is beyond just storing excess energy. A properly engineered battery backup system must also deliver enough power output to operate the loads you want to keep running. That’s why Solar SME doesn’t size an Enphase battery system based only on annual electricity consumption.

Essential-Load Backup

Essential load backup involves prioritization of certain circuits in case of outages. Such a system might help reduce the number of batteries needed but ensures that the critical appliances remain powered.

Whole-Home Backup

Whole-home backup is designed to support a much broader portion of the property's electrical load. Battery size, continuous output, peak output, service-panel configuration and load management all need to be evaluated before determining whether whole-home backup is appropriate.

There is no universal number of batteries that works for every property. The right Enphase battery configuration starts with a load assessment, not a one-size-fits-all formula.

Enphase Batteries with New or Existing Solar

New Solar + Enphase Battery Installation

For those who plan to install solar for the first time, Solar SME can design your photovoltaic system and battery backup together. Such an approach allows evaluating the solar plus storage system as one energy system rather than adding the battery afterwards. As a result, a tailored solar plus storage system will be designed that will fit your property’s real electricity consumption.

Add an Enphase Battery to Existing Solar

Already have solar? Then it doesn’t mean that the installation of a new energy storage will require replacement of the entire system.

The AC coupling architecture of Enphase offers flexibility in terms of adding batteries to existing solar arrays. In August 2026, Enphase introduced extended U.S. and Canadian support for adding the IQ Battery 10C and whole-home backup to existing third-party solar systems with the IQ Combiner 6C and IQ Meter Collar. Compatibility still needs to be evaluated on a project-by-project basis.

Enphase Battery Incentives & Financing

The cost of installing an Enphase Encharge battery system depends on several factors, including your location, storage capacity, electrical upgrades, solar system compatibility, installation requirements, and local permitting. Depending on where you live, state and local energy-storage incentives may also be available, potentially helping homeowners lower their overall installation costs.

While the federal residential tax credit for solar and battery storage expired in 2025, homeowners may still have alternative ways to access solar and battery solutions through third-party ownership (TPO) options. With a solar lease or power purchase agreement (PPA), a third-party provider typically owns and maintains the system while you pay for the energy it produces through a monthly payment.

Another possibility is a prepaid solar lease or PPA, where you make a larger upfront payment in exchange for long-term energy savings and, depending on the agreement, potential ownership of the system later. These financing structures can make an Enphase Encharge system more accessible while helping homeowners improve energy independence and backup protection.

Because incentive rules can change, Solar SME evaluates available programs based on your project’s location and current eligibility rather than promising a rebate that may no longer apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

The IQ Battery 5P can be a strong option when you want modular storage with 5.0 kWh of usable energy and 3.84 kVA of continuous output per unit. Multiple units can be configured when a property requires greater storage capacity.

The current IQ Battery 10C U.S. limited warranty covers the product for up to 15 years or 6,000 discharged cycles, whichever occurs first, subject to the warranty's conditions. The IQ Battery 5P also carries a 15-year limited warranty in the U.S.

That depends on your energy consumption, peak loads, desired backup duration, solar production and electrical configuration. Solar SME performs a load assessment rather than recommending a fixed number for every property.

Yes, Enphase storage can be evaluated for commercial applications where the goals may include resilience, solar self-consumption, energy management and support for critical loads. Commercial system sizing should be based on the property's load profile and operating requirements.

Enphase battery installation involves more than installing the battery hardware. The system may require coordination between solar equipment, IQ Batteries, system controllers, electrical panels, monitoring equipment and utility requirements. Working with a certified Enphase installer like Solar SME helps ensure that your system is properly evaluated, configured and commissioned according to applicable manufacturer requirements.
