WHAT IS NABCEP?

What the Credentials Mean

North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) is a non-profit organization that designs certification programs for the renewable energy sector. NABCEP certifications award those individuals who meet certain credentials’ requirements, including training, relevant experience, and passing examinations. This gives our clients one more way to evaluate the credentials of professionals involved in their solar energy projects.

Industry-Recognized Certification

NABCEP credentials demonstrate that an individual has met the requirements of a defined professional certification program.

Higher Standards

Professional qualifications support a focus on technical knowledge, safe working practices, and industry standards

Skilled Professionals

Training, relevant experience, and ongoing professional development help qualified professionals maintain their knowledge.

Better Outcomes

Understanding an installer's credentials helps you ask informed questions, compare providers, and choose a team suited to your project's needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

NABCEP stands for the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners. It is a nonprofit credentialing organization founded in 2002 that offers voluntary certifications for renewable energy professionals, with a strong focus on solar photovoltaic (PV) work. It certifies people, not products.

It means an individual met NABCEP’s requirements for a specific credential. For Board Certifications, that includes relevant training, documented experience, and passing an exam. Certified professionals must also renew their credentials and follow NABCEP’s Code of Ethics.

No. NABCEP certification is voluntary and is not a government license. Some incentive programs, utilities, or commercial and public bids may prefer or require certified staff, so check the rules that apply to your project.

No. A license is legal permission from a state or local authority, while NABCEP certification is voluntary proof of solar-specific skill. A good project involves both. Learn more on our Certificates and Licenses page.

The NABCEP PV Installation Professional (PVIP) credential is the broadest, covering design through operations and maintenance. Specialist credentials focus on one area, such as design or commissioning. Associate credentials show entry-level knowledge and don’t require the same experience.

Board Certifications run on a three-year cycle. To renew, professionals complete continuing education and show they’re still active in the industry. For PVIP, that means 30 hours of continuing education. A credential that isn’t renewed lapses.
